SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Your computer may stop responding (hang).
  • You may receive an "Invalid Page Fault in module <unknown>" error message.
  • Graphics in the game may be distorted or fuzzy.
  • The screen may turn black.
  • Horizontal lines may appear across the screen.
  • The game may quit immediately after you start it.
  • Your computer may spontaneously reboot.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one or more of the following conditions is true:

  • You need to install an updated version of the video driver for your video adapter.
  • Microsoft DirectX is not installed properly on your computer.
  • You do not have the latest version of Microsoft DirectX.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your hardware manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest version of the video driver for your video adapter.

For information about how to contact your hardware manufacturer, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To identify the manufacturer and model of your video adapter:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. If you are using a Microsoft Windows 95-based, Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, click the Device Manager tab.

If you are using a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer or Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

  1. Click the plus sign (+) next to Display adapters to expand the branch.
  2. Under the Display adapters branch, note the manufacturer and model of your video adapter, and then click OK.
  3. Close all open windows on the desktop.

If the issue continues to occur, or if the latest version of the video driver for your video adapter is already installed in your computer, download and install the latest version of DirectX from the following Microsoft Web site:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. Click the Performance tab.
  4. Click Graphics.
  5. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting).
  6. Click OK, then click Close.
  7. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
