SYMPTOMS

When you enter decimal numbers for some measurements in Works, you may get unexpected sizes. For example, setting the distance between lines to 2.5 lines in the Word Processor module may result in approximately 2 inches between lines or 12 inches. Similar problems may occur in the Spreadsheet module when setting row height, column width, or margins using decimal values.

This problem occurs if the International setting in Windows is set to a Country that uses a comma for a decimal point. If this is the case, Works does not recognize a period as being a decimal point, causing an incorrect result when you enter decimal measurements in Works.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem use the following steps for your version of Windows.

Windows 95

  1. If Works is running, save your work and exit.
  2. On the Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Regional Settings icon.
  4. On the Regional Settings tab, make sure the regional settings are set for English (United States).
  5. On the Number tab, make sure that the Decimal Symbol set to "." (a period without the quotation marks). Click OK.

Windows 3.1

  1. If Works is running, save your work and exit.
  2. In the Main group, double-click the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click the International icon.
  4. Make sure the following measurements are selected:
    • Country is set to United States

    • Language is set to English (American)

    • Keyboard Layout is set to US

    • Measurement is set to English

  5. In the Number Format area, click Change.
  6. In the International - Number Format dialog box, make sure that the Decimal Separator is set to "." (a period without the quotation marks) and click OK.
  7. Click OK to close the International dialog box, then click Exit on the Settings menu to exit the Control Panel.
