Cannot Use Network Variables in Setup Script (SETUP.STF)

Q110421

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1

SYMPTOMS

A workstation installation of Word for Windows fails if you use variables in your SETUP.STF file. For example, if you use the following path in your SETUP.STF file, Setup fails because the path contains a Novell-type variable (%Username%):

F:\USER\%Username%\WINWORD

CAUSE

Setup does not support the use of variables in the SETUP.STF file. As a result, you cannot use variables to create a single SETUP.STF file to install Word on all your network workstations.

WORKAROUND

You can create a single SETUP.STF file to install Word on all your network workstations if all the workstations map the same drive letter to their user directories. For example, if you map U: to the user directory for each workstation (that is, U: = \\SERVER\SHARE!USER\USERNAME), you can use "U:\WINWORD" in SETUP.STF to specify the directory where Setup will install Word. Setup will install Word in the \\SERVER\SHARE!USER\USERNAME\WINWORD subdirectory.

SETUP.STF and specify and destination and script and word6
