How to Tell If ODBC Is Installed Correctly |
Q109567
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
- Microsoft Windows versions 3.0, 3.1
SUMMARY
Word for Windows uses the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) drivers to access data from database management system files. The ODBC drivers are installed during a Complete setup of Word 6.0 for Windows. To verify that the ODBC drivers have been installed, attach a database data file to a main document with Confirm Conversions turned on. If the drivers are installed, the following will appear in the Confirm Data Source dialog box:
<Database name> via ODBC.
If the ODBC drivers and ODBC driver manager have been properly installed by Word 6.0 for Windows, an icon for ODBC will appear in the Windows Control Panel. If you choose this icon, the Data Sources dialog box appears, which should list the following data sources:
dBASE Files (dBASE Files (*.dbf))
FoxPro Files (FoxPro Files (*.dbf))
MS Access Databases (Access Data (*.mdb))
Paradox Files (Paradox Files (*.db))
MORE INFORMATION
The following are the files required to run ODBC:
ODBC.DLL
ODBCINST.DLL
ODBC.INF
SIMBA.DLL
SIMADMIN.DLL
MSJETDSP.DLL
The ODBC Installation Help file, ODBCINST.HLP is not required.
The following are ODBC drivers shipped with Word 6 for Windows:
DRIVER APPLICATION ------ ----------- XBS110.DLL dBASE and Fox driver RED110.DLL Access driver PDX110.DLL Paradox driver
To Install ODBC
- Run Setup for Word 6.0 or 6.0a for Windows.
- Choose Add/Remove.
- Choose Conversions/Filters and Data Access.
- Select Data Access ODBC.
To Configure ODBC to Work with Word 6.0
Once ODBC is installed, the drivers must appear in the ODBC Administrator in Windows Control Panel. To set up an ODBC Data Source, do the following:
- Run Windows Control Panel and choose the ODBC icon.
- If the Data Source is not on the list, choose Add.
- From the Installed ODBC Drivers list, select a driver, and choose OK.
- Type in a descriptive Data Source Name--this can be any text--and then choose OK.
- Select Use Current Directory and choose OK.
