MSDN: Setup Fails on Standard or Maximum Options

ID: Q103824

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Developers Network (MSDN), Disc 4

SYMPTOMS

Running Setup for MSDN Disc 4 may result in a general protection (GP) fault or an Application Execution Error, and/or may hang your machine.

RESOLUTION

Workaround 1

Close all other applications before running Setup:

1. Make copies of the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and WIN.INI files.

2. Perform a clean boot with the following minimal AUTOEXEC.BAT and

   CONFIG.SYS files as follows:

      AUTOEXC.BAT
      Path=<include the Windows directory, the MS-DOS directory,
           and the root>
      prompt $p$g
      set temp = <Windows directory>\temp
      MSCDEX.EXE

      CONFIG.SYS
      Files=45
      buffers=20
      device=<Windows directory>\himem.sys
      CD-ROM driver

   Note: Include any device drivers that you absolutely must have in
   order to boot your machine:

     SYSTEM.INI
     LOAD=<blank>
     RUN=<blank>

   Remove all icons from the Startup program group.

3. Use the standard Microsoft Windows supplied video driver (that is,

   reinstall the VGA driver).

4. Start Windows in standard mode (using the WIN /S command). 5. Start File Manager, access the CD drive, and run the SETUP.EXE file

   on the root directory of the MSDN CD-ROM disc.

Workaround 2

Use the manual Setup instructions.

Follow the manual installation instructions included in MANSETUP.TXT in the root directory of the Developer Network CD-ROM.

MORE INFORMATION

Errors during setup are usually caused by incompatible software running on your computer.
