SUMMARY
Error 3172 in the LAN Manager server error log--invalid message number--is issued when the alerter service cannot reach a user specified to receive alerts from the machine.
If you see this error, select a valid user to receive alerts: the current user either is not up when the alerts are sent or no longer exists on the network.
