SYMPTOMS

When you use the Save Workspace command (on the File menu) to save an *.mpw file, Microsoft Project may stop responding and you may receive one of the following error messages.

Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the Problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive the following error message:

Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Exception access violation (0xc0000005), Address <address>.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

  • A project that uses a resource pool is open.

  • That resource pool is open read-only.

  • That resource pool is the active window when you Save Workspace.

  • You click Yes to the Update Resource Pool message.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Project 98 for Windows Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To work around this problem, before trying to Save Workspace, change the active project to any project other than the resource pool, by clicking a project on the Windows menu.
