[Updated 4/SEP]Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
Hello everyone!
[LATEST UPDATE 4/SEP]
Project slowly moving along with my spare time, currently implementing a GeckoFX + Xulrunner engine instead of Trident which I know most people frown on.
However the conversion is taking some time and the code has lots of minor tweaks that need to be done to control the new "GeckoWebBrowser". Other than that
maybe people will be a bit more impressed with a "non-trident shell" for once, however my main intention is still just to "design" the Ribbon UI over a pre-made engine.
Just been bored lately and decided to play around with Visual Basic a bit and decided to see what Internet Explorer would look like but also perform
with the Ribbon UI implemented instead of the "Classic" UI, this is a very basic and simple program that just adds a "Custom made" UI over the
"Web Browser" control in VB.NET. This means it's really just Internet Explorer at the core and requires that to be installed in order to run as there is
actually no engine provided.
Total work time:
2 Hours (Includes design and images that were converted from IE to this program, there is no Ribbon Control used just painstakingly custom vectors/panels)
Just a screenshot:
Here's a link to try it yourself, 400kb binary file. Place anywhere and run, it is portable as long as machine runs Windows and has Internet Explorer and .NET Framework 4.5 installed.

UPDATE!! [1st September]
Did a little more work on it, started the view tab which currently only has two functions:
-Zoom
-Full Screen toggle
Here's a screenshot of the full screen mode in action:
If you would like to download this newer build a try it here's the link:

Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
For once, a IE shell that actually looks decent and is interesting
Windows Defender for great justice! Bugs are an international trading company. I need to defeat the anti-debugging and obfuscation methods. It wasn't for Intel's absurd ability to load in ie6. Why even waste time with people in an envelope?
Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
Totally agree, seems clean and nice, however it uses Ribbon UI which is a protected MS design.Wheatley wrote:For once, a IE shell that actually looks decent and is interesting
Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
But they license it to third parties for free.ggpm wrote:Totally agree, seems clean and nice, however it uses Ribbon UI which is a protected MS design.
BTW, Microsoft has a Ribbon WPF control on their site IIRC
Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
Internet Explorer 12 will have the Ribbon UI, probably.

I can't download it anyway, the link is broken
Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
Who says? I think it won't. The trend now is to make the UI minimal.Maxxyz wrote:Internet Explorer 12 will have the Ribbon UI, probably.

The UI is very nice and clean! Good job and keep working on it

Well, it has to fit Explorer/Office style somehow.AlphaBeta wrote:Who says? I think it won't. The trend now is to make the UI minimal.Maxxyz wrote:Internet Explorer 12 will have the Ribbon UI, probably.

Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
I find that highly unlikely. It completely contradicts the minimalistic metro approach they took with modern IE10. And why would it have to fit that style at all? Besides, they've had their chances of turning it into a Ribbon app many times already; Office 2007 first introduced the Ribbon, so they could adapt IE7 for it - but they didn't. Windows 7 introduced some new Ribbon-based applications, and yet IE8 wasn't among them. Same goes for 9, 10 and 11.

May I ask how did you get that OneNote/PowerPoint/Excel/Word button in your superbar, it looks nice and I think it would be handy to have

No thanks. That looks cluttered. It's like putting a ribbon on a calculator app. Thurrott explained why these concepts were dropped, and for good reason IMO...

Re: Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
Couldn't agree more, I've seen an image of a calculator app actually shown by Microsoft as a "DO NOT" for their Ribbon WPF controls. This little project is really just to see how it would beDeFacto wrote: No thanks. That looks cluttered. like as a practical demonstration. I didn't use the Ribbon controls by Microsoft just to make a slimmer and more efficient model that maintains the concept. I know ribbon is definitely not
everyone's cup of tea, but I'm just trying my best to improvise a compromise between the two (and how good my image making is for every button ).

Re: [Updated 1/SEP]Internet Explorer with Ribbon UI
Your project is actually quite interesting, I'd love to see how it will turn out. But ultimately, a Ribbon web browser is not a pleasant sight for my eyes. At least not the way those concepts were executed.
