Windows "Longhorn" build 3706 (with a build tag of 3706.Lab06 N.021029-1731) is a Milestone 3 build of the Microsoft Windows "Longhorn" operating system. It was compiled on 29th October 2002 and leaked on 22nd May 2004.

If the Windows Sidebar is enabled in this build, the Start menu becomes attached to the Sidebar itself, like in build 3683.

Main changes

This build is the first one known to include:

  • "Desktop Composition Engine" (DCE), later known as "Desktop Window Manager" (DWM) (not yet functional);[1]
  • the possibility to edit a picture and its metadata from the breadcrumb bar;[2]
  • a new animated effect on single thumbnails shown in the breadcrumb bar (later disappeared in build 3718[3]);[4]
  • the drafts of Control Panel applets "Download Manager" and "Portable Audio Devices";[5][6]
  • "Picture & Video" and "Music" libraries (later disappeared in build 5308 and eventually released in Windows 7);[7]
  • the possibility to create a "castle" (eventually released in Windows 7 with the name of "Home Group");[8]
  • a new desktop wallpaper.[9]
