SYMPTOMS

When you start a defrag job in Winternals Defrag Manager by using a defrag schedule, or when you start a defrag job by clicking Defrag Now, you may find the following description in the Result pane:

Task Failed to Run

CAUSE

This problem may occur for one of the following reasons:

  • The Task Scheduler service is not running.
  • The account that you use to run the defrag job does not have permissions to run a batch job.
  • The account that you use to run the defrag job does not have the Full Control permissions on the defrag job.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods

Method 1: If the Task Scheduler service is not running

If Task Scheduler service is not running, resolve this problem by restarting the Task Scheduler service and running the defrag job again.

Method 2: If the account does not have permissions

If the account that you use to run the defrag job does not have permissions to run a batch job, resolve this problem by following these steps to resolve this problem:

  1. Verify that the account you use is in the list when you click BROWSE in the defrag job properties.
  2. Verify the password of the account is correct.

Method 3: If the computer is in a workgroup

If the computer that is running Defrag Manager is in a domain, verify that you use a domain administrator account. If the computer that is running Defrag Manager is in a workgroup, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 936006.
