SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 or Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008, you receive the following error message:

Unable to install.
Error 1402: Could not open key registry key

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Delete the registry keys that may be corrupted or damaged. For more information about how to remove these registry keys, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following methods, depending on the operating system:
    • Windows Vista
      In Windows Vista, click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

      [GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    • Windows XP
      In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Right-click the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key, and then click Permission.
  4. For each item in the Group or user names list, click the item, click to select the Allow check box for Full Control, and then click Apply.
  5. Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
  6. Try to install Streets & Trips again.
