SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. You install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The computer also has the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) installed. In this scenario, you find that with the Folder Redirection Group Policy configuration set, you can have folder duplication at the Folder Redirection path. You can do this if you log on the Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server that has the MUI installed or in a language-specific version of Windows Server 2003.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because there is a design change in Windows Server 2003 SP1.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. If you find duplicate folders in different languages, install the code change package and the check registry value that matches your scenario:
- Log on by using the MUI Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server together with different user language configurations.
In this case, you must set the registry value to 0. This is the default registry value if one is not present.
- Log on by using the MUI Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server and by using language-specific client computer Windows systems with same user language configurations.
In this case, you do not have to set the registry value because the value is already set to 1. Remember that package installation automatically sets this as the value.
Note This problem may also occur on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer.
Before you install Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows creates a Shell folder. This folder is based on the names that the desktop language configuration defines. After you install Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows creates a different Shell folder. This folder is based on the names that the computer language configuration defines.
This design change fixes a problem in the Windows Server 2003 MUI system. In this problem, if you configure Folder Redirection and log on to the MUI system several times with a different language every time, the system duplicates the Folder Redirection store folder. The system does this by creating one folder for each language.
Another scenario is defined by a mixed environment that combines language-specific versions of the Windows systems, the MUI Windows systems, and systems that have Folder Redirection configured to roam between these systems.
The Windows MUI systems are all English-based. Therefore, if you configure Folder Redirection where you store the Shell folders regardless of the Windows system that you log on to, Windows creates English-based Shell folders. Windows creates these folders when you log on to a Windows Server 2003 SP1 Terminal Server that has the MUI installed. This occurs regardless of the desktop language configuration. If you previously logged on to a specific language version of a Windows system, the language-specific Shell folder-based folders will already be created. This scenario has you store Folder Redirection folders that have duplicate users, Shell folders that have different language version folder names, English-based MUI systems, and the default MUI language for systems.
