SYMPTOMS

When you run a version of Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Operator Console that has the Windows DNS Server Management Pack installed, you may receive the following error message.

Note This message is reported by Microsoft Windows 2000-based Domain Name System (DNS) servers and by Windows Server 2003-based DNS servers.

Description: The DNS Service Discovery management pack failed to execute the DNS Service Discovery Script script successfully. The following error event was returned "The class name 'MicrosoftDNS_Server' did not return any valid instances. Please check to see if this is a valid WMI class name. This error might have been caused by insufficient MOM response account privilege, please check to see if the MOM response account have a high enough privilege to access the WMI namespace.". The following additional error details were returned "". Please refer to the events associated with this alert to view the computers that have experienced this problem.

CAUSE

This problem may occur because of a problem in an earlier version of the DNS provider DNSProv.dll.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the hotfix that is mentioned in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

914831 The Wmiprvse.exe process stops unexpectedly, and event ID 1000 is logged in the Application log in Windows Server 2003

This hotfix contains an updated version of DNSProv.dll.

Note If you still experience the error that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section after you update DNSProv.dll to the latest version, examine the event log on the computer to determine whether other DNS problems are logged.
