SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP, or Microsoft Office 2003 application or component on your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message, where cdrom is the letter of your CD drive:

Error 1926. Could not set file security for file 'cdrom:\Config.MSI\'. Error: 4 Verify that you have sufficient privileges to modify the security permissions for this file.

Note The error number may vary. For example, the error message may include "Error: 5".

You may also receive this error message when you try to install an Office 2000 application or component on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.

CAUSE

This issue may occur on a Windows XP-based computer if the System account does not have the Full Control permission on the hard disk drive where you want to install an Office application or component. This issue may occur on a Windows 2000-based computer if the Everyone group does not have the Full Control permission on the hard disk drive where you want to install an Office application or component.

RESOLUTION

Windows XP

To resolve this issue on your Windows XP-based computer, follow these steps:

1. Disable Simple File Sharing if it is enabled.
   1. Click Start, click Run, type Explorer.exe, and then click OK.
   2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
   3. On the View tab, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.
2. Grant the System account the Full Control permission to the hard disk where you want to install Office.
   1. Click Start, click Run, type Compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
   2. Expand Storage, and then click Disk Management.
   3. Under Volume, right-click the hard disk where you want to install Office, and then click Properties.
   4. On the Security tab, under Group or user names, click System, click to select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission, and then click OK.
   5. Try to install Office again.

Windows 2000

To resolve this issue on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you must grant the Everyone group the Full Control permission to the hard disk where you want to install Office. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
2. Expand Storage, and then click Disk Management.
3. Under Volume, right-click the hard disk where you want to install Office, and then click Properties.
4. On the Security tab, under Group or user names, click Everyone, and then click to select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission.
5. Try to install Office again.
