Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package also fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  • When you open a protected Excel 2002 workbook that contains a PivotTable, you may receive the following error message:

    Unable to read file

This problem occurs if the following events occur:

    • The workbook has the AutoRecovery feature turned on.
    • Excel has saved at least one AutoRecovery file for the workbook.
    • You saved the workbook before you close it.
If you turn off the AutoRecovery feature for the workbook, you may reduce the occurrence of this problem.
  • When you open a workbook, you may receive the following Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) error messages:

    • Error 424: Object Required.

    • Error 438: Object doesn't support this property or method.

The VBA controls do not load after you receive these error messages.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

    • The workbook was created in Microsoft Excel 2002 Service Pack 3 (SP3).
    • The workbook dynamically loads a Microsoft Office Excel Add-in (.xla) when you open the workbook.
    • The add-in loads VBA controls when you open the workbook.
