SYMPTOMS

When you try to defragment a hard disk by using Computer Management in Microsoft Windows 2000, and the hard disk is formatted with the NTFS file system, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • The disk defragmentation process stops responding.
  • When you try to quit Computer Management, Computer Management stops responding.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article installed on your computer:

818888 "Access Violation (0xC0000005)" error message occurs when you quit Disk Defragmenter

This problem occurs because a member variable that is added by the 818888 hotfix is not initialized correctly. In this scenario, this member variable might contain data that is not valid. Therefore, an access violation error may occur when you close Computer Management.
