SYMPTOMS

After you use the Disk Defragmenter tool to analyze or to defragment your hard disk and then you quit Disk Defragmenter, you receive an access violation error message that is similar to the following:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
Exception: access violation (0xC0000005), Address:

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Note Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3).


WORKAROUND

To use the Disk Defragmenter tool to work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. To start the Defragmentation tool, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. Click on Disk Management, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
  3. Select a volume to defragment, and then click the Defragment button.
  4. After the Defragmentation Completed dialog box is displayed, click the Close button.
  5. Wait until the Analysis and Defragmentation displays are updated and the volume is enumerated. You may see a Resizing the color image message as the displays are being updated.
  6. Exit the Defragmentation tool.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
