SYMPTOMS

On your Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • When you try to connect to an Internet connection or create a new network connection, you may receive the following error message:

    Cannot load Remote Access Connection Manager.
    Error 711

  • When you right-click My Computer, and then click Properties, you may receive the following error message:

    Rundll32.exe Entry point not found.
    The procedure entry RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be located in the dynamic link library winsta.dll.

  • When you try to start the Remote Access Connection Manager service, you may receive the following error message:

    Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on Local Computer.
    Error 5: Access is denied


  • When you try to perform a system restore, you may receive the following error message:

    Restrui.exe Entry point not found.
    The procedure entry Remote Access Connection Manager and RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore related error messages appears in Windows XP could not be located in the dynamic link library winsta.dll


CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:

  • You install SP1 for Windows XP when Windows XP Home is installed, and then you upgrade to Windows XP Professional.
  • You install SP1 for Windows XP and then use the System Restore feature to restore Windows to a state before the installation of the service pack.


Either of these conditions may cause a mismatch of the registry settings in the System registry hive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following methods.

Method 1

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Make sure that the Objectname entry is set to LocalSystem in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan


After you do so, delete the following registry subkeys. These subkeys on a Windows XP-based computer that does not have SP1 installed may cause the symptoms that are described earlier in this article:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26


To make sure that the Objectname entry is set to the LocalSystem value, and to back up the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan registry subkey, follow these steps:

  1. Start registry editor.
  2. Locate the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan

  3. On the File menu, click Export.
  4. In the File Name box, type exported rasman key, and then click Save.
  5. In the RasMan subkey, locate and then click the ObjectName string entry.
  6. If the value of the ObjectName entry is not set to LocalSystem, click Modify on the Edit menu.
  7. In the Value data box, type LocalSystem, and then click OK.

To delete the 25 and 26 subkeys from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan registry subkey, follow these steps:

  1. Locate and then click the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25

  2. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  3. Click Yes.
  4. Locate and then click the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26

  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. Click Yes.
  7. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Method 2

If you still receive an error message when you try to perform a system restore after you complete the steps in Method 1, do the following:

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type %windir%\inf.
  2. Locate the Sr.inf file, right-click the file, and then click Install.
  3. In the Files Needed dialog box, click Browse. Locate the Sr.sy_ file in the i386 folder of the Windows XP CD, click the file, and then click Open.
  4. When the installation is completed, restart your computer.

To prevent this problem, install the Q329441 critical update from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site.
