"Insufficient Resources" Error Message When You Back Up or Restore a Large SQL Database in Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to back up or restore a Microsoft SQL Server database, one or both of the following issues may occur:

  • You receive the following error message:

    Insufficient resources error.

  • The following event is logged in the system event log:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: NTDS
    Event ID: 1450
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVERNAME
    Description: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.


CAUSE

This issue may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • The SQL Server database is larger than 4 gigabytes (GB).

    -and-
  • The following hotfix is installed on your computer:

    316430 Performance of Microsoft Commerce Server-based Programs May Degrade Over Time


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the hotfix that is described in the "Cause" section. To do this, follow these steps.

Note If you remove this hotfix from a computer that is using a Microsoft Commerce Server 2000-based program, the performance of the computer may decrease.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Windows 2000 Hotfix (Pre-SP4), and then click Change/Remove.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.
  5. Click OK.
