SYMPTOMS
When you try to print from a program in a Virtual PC for Mac virtual machine, either nothing occurs and no print job is sent to your Mac printer, or you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This problem occurs if your print driver is attached to the wrong port, if there is a problem communicating to the printer from the Macintosh computer, or if there is a problem communicating to the printer from the virtual machine.
RESOLUTION
Use the following methods to determine where the problem exists.
Method 1: Print from Mac OS
Use SimpleText (for Mac OS 9) or TextEdit (for Mac OS X) to try to print a simple text document. If you cannot print from Mac OS, confirm that the correct printer is chosen in the Chooser (for Mac OS 9) or in the Print Center (for Mac OS X). If the correct printer is chosen and you still cannot print from your Macintosh computer, contact the printer manufacturer or contact AppleCare for help in resolving this problem. Otherwise, continue to the next method.
Method 2: Configure the Printer Drivers
The printer driver may be incorrectly configured for printing to your Macintosh printer.
- Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
- Click the printer driver icon for the printer driver that you use to print.
- On the File menu click Properties.
- Click the Ports tab.
- If the LPT1 port is not the selected port, click LPT1, and then click Apply.
- Click the General tab.
- Click Print Test Page.
If the test page prints, try again to print from your program. Make sure that the correct printer is chosen in the Print dialog box before you try to print. If the test page does not print, contact the program manufacturer if you need help in resolving this issue.
If the test page does not print, continue to the next method.
Method 3: Install the Macintosh Printer Driver
If you do not have a printer installed under Mac Printers, use one of the following sets of steps to install one. If you use an inkjet printer, use the "Install the Macintosh Printer (Inkjet) Driver" steps. If you use a PostScript-based laser printer, use the "Install the Macintosh Printer (PostScript) Driver" steps. After you install the appropriate version of the Macintosh printer, try again to print from the virtual machine.
Install the Macintosh Printer (Inkjet) Driver
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Double-click Add a Printer.
- Click Next.
- Click Local printer attached to this computer.
- Click to clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play Printer check box.
- Click Next.
- Click LPT1 port, and then click Next.
- In the Manufacturers box, click Epson.
- In the Printers box, click Epson AP-3260, and then click Next.
- Under Printer Name, type Mac Printer (Inkjet).
- Under Do you want to use this printer as the default printer, click Yes.
- Click Next, and then click Do not share this printer.
- Click Next, and then click Yes under Do you want to print a test page.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
Install the Macintosh Printer (PostScript) Driver
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Double-click Add a Printer.
- Click Next.
- Click Local printer attached to this computer.
- Click to clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play Printer check box.
- Click Next.
- Click LPT1 port, and then click Next.
- In the Manufacturers box, click Apple.
- In the Printers box, click Apple LaserWriter II NT, and then click Next.
- Under Printer Name, type Mac Printer (PostScript).
- Under Do you want to use this printer as the default printer, click Yes.
- Click Next, and then click Do Not Share this printer.
- Click Next, and then click Yes under Do you want to print a test page.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
If the test page prints, try again to print from your program. Before you try to print, make sure that you select the Macintosh printer that you just installed in the Print dialog box. If the test page cannot print, contact the program manufacturer if you need help in resolving this issue.
Method 4: Remove and Reinstall Virtual PC for Mac
If the test page cannot print, your virtual machine may be damaged. Create a new virtual machine and configure the appropriate Macintosh printer driver. Try to print a test page from the Macintosh printer. If it fails again, remove and reinstall your copy of Virtual PC for Mac.
To remove Virtual PC for Mac version 5.0, follow the steps in the following article. However, do not delete the Virtual PC folder that contains the hard disk images. Instead, rename the folder to Old VPC Files. This will give you a backup of your original files. They may not be damaged.

To remove Virtual PC version 6, follow these steps:
- Find the Virtual PC folder, and then drag it to the Trash.
- Click Home on the folder Toolbar.
- Double-click the Documents folder.
- Drag to the Trash the Virtual PC Scripts folder.
- Rename the Virtual PC List folder to Old VPC Files.
After you remove Virtual PC, install a new copy from the Virtual PC CD. If you downloaded the Virtual PC 6.1 upgrade for version 6.0, download a new copy of the upgrade from the Virtual PC for Mac Web site. To download the upgrade file, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Click the Already have Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.0? Upgrade to Version 6.1 for Free link, and then follow the instructions on the Web page to download the upgrade.
After you install Virtual PC, create a new virtual machine from the pre-configured hard disk image that is included with Virtual PC. Set up a Macintosh printer if one is not already present and try again to print a test page.
If the test page prints, move your original hard disk image from the Old VPC Files folder to the new Virtual PC folder or to the Virtual PC List folder that is in the Documents folder. Start the original virtual machine and then try to print.
If you cannot print, that virtual machine may be damaged. You will be able to move your data files from one virtual machine to the other through a shared folder.
