APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Project Web Access
  • Microsoft Project Server 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Project Server 2002 and you try to connect the SharePoint Team Services server to Microsoft Project Server, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Project Server cannot read from the specified SharePoint database. The reasons could be:

1. ComputerName\UserName does not have read permissions on the specified SharePoint database.
2. The database server and database name are not correctly specified.
3. The database server is down and cannot be accessed at this time.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions are true:

  • You installed SharePoint Team Services, or have a previous installation of SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft Office XP, but you have not provisioned the SharePoint Team Services Web site for Microsoft Project Server.
  • The Windows Account does not have database reader permissions to the SharePoint Team Services Database in Microsoft SQL Server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method One: Run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard to Provision your SharePoint Team Services Site for Microsoft Project Server

Note If you installed SharePoint Team Services, or you have a previous installation of SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft Office XP, but you have not provisioned the SharePoint Team Services Web site for Microsoft Project Server, use the following method to resolve the problem.

Run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard to provision your SharePoint Team Services Site for Microsoft Project Server.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Microsoft Project Server CD-ROM, double-click Setup.exe.
  2. On the Microsoft Project Server 2002 Setup screen, click SharePoint Configuration Wizard.
  3. You may receive a message that recommends that you to download the latest Office XP Service Pack. If you click OK, you must download the latest service pack for Office XP. If you click Cancel, and select to download the service pack later, continue to run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard.
  4. Click Provision Additional Websites for Microsoft Project Server, and then click Next.
  5. Select the Web site that you want to provision. For example, you can select Default Website.

Note If you have created a new Web site specifically for SharePoint Team Services, but it is not listed in the menu to select a Web site, cancel the wizard and follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft SharePoint Administration.
    2. In the Virtual Folders section, locate your new SharePoint Web site. In the last column, next to Versions, click Extend.
    3. Type the name of your database server. Type the username that has SQL administrator permissions, and then type the password. Accept the default Site Type value, and then click Submit.
    4. Go to step 1 to provision your SharePoint Team Services Site for Microsoft Project Server.

  6. Click Next to provision your SharePoint Team Services Web sites with the Microsoft Project Server components.

If you receive the following error message,

    Failed to Create Database Role

    click OK.

Note This message may appear three times. This message appears because the database role was created during your initial installation of SharePoint Team Services.
  7. After the wizard has completed, you will receive a confirmation screen, that states the following:
    • Server Name
    • Web Server Port
    • SharePoint Administration Port
    • Database Server Name
    • Database Name
Note the information that is provided on the confirmation screen. You must have the information provided on the confirmation screen to complete step 10. After you receive the confirmation screen, connect SharePoint Team Services in Microsoft Project Web Access.
  8. Log on to Microsoft Project Web Access as the Administrator.
  9. On the Admin menu, click Manage SharePoint Team Services.
  10. On the Connect to Servers page, type your SharePoint Team Services confirmation information. The confirmation information is processed after you install the Stswiz.exe file from the Microsoft Project Server CD-ROM.

Note You must run the Pscom+.exe utility and DB_DataReader rights must be granted to the SharePoint Database in SQL Server before you connect SharePoint Team Services to Microsoft Project Server. 11. Click Save Changes to test the connection of SharePoint Team Services to Microsoft Project Server.

Note You may have to replace the ServerName with the server name, IP address, or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of your Microsoft Project Server computer to test connectivity.

Method Two: Grant the Designated Windows User Account DB_DataReader Rights to the SharePoint Team Services Database in SQL Server

Note If the Windows Account does not have database reader permissions to the SharePoint Team Services Database in SQL Server, use the following method to resolve the problem.

Grant the designated Windows user account DB_DataReader rights to the SharePoint Team Services database in SQL Server
