SYMPTOMS

One way to install a local printer is by using PrintUI.dll by means of INF and by following the steps in the article that is listed in the "References" section. If you use this method to install a local printer that uses a custom print processor, the printer processor is not selected in the printer Properties dialog box even though the new print processor is installed. You may experience the following symptoms:

  • If you perform a new installation, you always receive the Winprint.dll print processor.
  • If you replace an existing driver, the selection for the previous print processor is retained.

Note This problem does not occur if you use the Add Printer Wizard to install the printer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
