SUMMARY
Phase 2 (final phase) of the new Greek telephone numbering scheme will take effect from 3rd November 2002 (for fixed telephone numbers) and 19th January 2003 (for mobile telephone numbers). This article explains the necessary changes in the operating system and the user's settings in order to comply with these changes.

Telephony API (TAPI) allows you to configure dialing rules for all telephony programs. One of the features of Windows Telephony is the ability to automatically use the correct outside line access codes, long distance and international prefixes, and other dialing rules based on your location and the destination of the telephone call.
On 3rd November 2002 the final phase of the new telephone numbering scheme will begin to implement in Greece. You can find more information by visiting the National Telecommunications and Post Commission Web page at:

Microsoft recommends that all users operating from locations inside Greece should configure their dial-up not to use Dialing Rules at all. In that case the user will have to provide the whole “dial” number for example "2106151200" or "69Α1234567". This dialing format will work regardless of the location of the call initiator relative to the location of the call recipient. That is, the area code is dialed at all times regardless of the call being local or long-distance.
For scenarios that the user wishes to utilize Windows Telephony to access telephone numbers in Greece, please follow these steps:
In Microsoft Windows 98, 98 SE, ME and NT 4.0 (SP6):
- Start Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
- Locate and click the following key in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Country List\30\SameAreaRule
- On the Edit menu, click Modify, and make sure that "G" appears in the Value data field. Replace "FG" (if available) with "G".
- Locate and click the following key in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Country List\30\LongDistanceRule
- On the Edit menu, click Modify, and in the Value data field replace “0FG” with “G”.
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart the computer.
Make sure that all your locations are configured properly. To do this:
- Select Telephony from the Control Panel.
- In the My Locations tab make sure that all locations inside Greece have the proper Area Code. For example for Athens use “21”, for Thessalonica use “231” and so on.
Make sure that all your dial-up connections are configured properly. To do this:
- Start Dial-Up Networking.
- Right click the connection you want to check and select Properties.
- In the General tab make sure that the Area Code is properly entered. For example for Athens use “21”, for Thessalonica use “231”, for an ISP having a 09625-number use "89625". Also make sure that the correct number is entered. In order to find the correct number, use the following rules:
- For fixed phones, replace "0" at the beginning of the old number with number "2". For example: number "010 6151200" should be "210 6151200".
- For premium rate numbers (090), remove the initial "0". For example: number "090 11 012345" should be "90 11 012345".
- For free phone (0800) and shared-cost (0801) numbers, remove the initial "0". For example, "0800 11 01234" should be "800 11 01234".
- For dial-up numbers (096), replace "0" at the beginning of the old number with number "8". For example: number "096 2 012345" should be "896 2 012345".
- From 19 January 2003: For mobile phones, replace "0" at the beginning of the old number with number "6". For example: number "09Α 1234567" should be "69Α 1234567".
- Click OK to save your changes.
In case you need to create new dial-up connections make sure that you enter the correct phone number by using the rules described in the third step above.
