SUMMARY

Phase 1 of the new Greek telephone numbering scheme will take effect from 20th January 2002 up until 30th September 2002. This article explains the necessary changes in the operating system and the user’s settings in order to comply with these changes.

MORE INFORMATION

Telephony API (TAPI) allows you to configure dialing rules for all telephony programs. One of the features of Windows Telephony is the ability to automatically use the correct outside line access codes, long distance and international prefixes, and other dialling rules based on your location and the destination of the telephone call.

On 20th January 2002 Greece will begin using a new telephone numbering scheme. You can find more information by visiting the National Telecommunications and Post Commission webpage at:

The new numbering scheme is described in:

(in Greek) or

(in English).

Microsoft recommends that all users operating from locations inside Greece should configure all their dial-up connections not to use Dialing Rules at all. In that case the user will have to provide the whole “dialable” number for example “0106151300” or “0965077777”. This dialing format will work regardless of the location of the call initiator relative to the location of the call recipient. That is, the area code is dialed at all times regardless if the call is local or long-distance.

For scenarios that the user wishes to utilize Windows Telephony to access telephone numbers in Greece, please take the following steps:

In Microsoft Windows 98, 98 SE, ME and NT 4.0 (SP6):

  1. Start Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Country List\30\SameAreaRule
