SYMPTOMS
After the post-Service Pack 4 (SP4) Hotfix Rollup Package (HRP) is installed, Smsmon32.exe may stop responding (hang) on a Systems Management Server (SMS) client. This problem may occur when a user logs on, logs off, or shuts down the client computer. When this problem occurs, Smsmon32.exe hangs while a dialog box with Wait, End Task, and Cancel buttons appears.
RESOLUTION
For SMS 2.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5) sites, this fix is included in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 815373. Click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to apply the hotfix
To apply the hotfix, use either of the following methods.
Using the hotfix installer
Note This method is for Intel-based computers only.
- Create a folder in a location that is accessible to your SMS site servers.
- Copy the update file (Q331198.exe) and the platform folders to the new folder. The folder structure must be such that the update file is located one folder "above" the platform folders.
- From each of the primary and secondary SMS site servers in your environment, log on to your site server by using an account with administrator permissions.
- Quit the SMS Administrator console if it is running.
- Run Q331198.exe, and then follow the instructions in the wizard.
Using a manual installation
- Create a folder in a location that is accessible to your SMS site servers.
- Copy the platform folders that contain the hotfix files to the new folder.
- From each of the primary and secondary SMS site servers in your environment, log on to your site server by using an account with administrator permissions.
- Quit the SMS Administrator console if it is running.
- Stop all SMS services.
- Replace the Ccim32.dll, Clisvcl.exe, Cqmgr32.dll, Launch32.exe, Odpsys32.exe, Odpusr32.exe, Smsmon32.exe, and Smsapm32.exe files in the
Sms_root_folder\Bin\Platformfolder with the versions from the hotfix. - Replace the Swdist32.exe file in the
Sms_root_folder\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\SWDist\Platformfolder with the version from the hotfix. - Replace the Apasetup.exe file in the
Sms_root_folder\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Smsapm32\Platformfolder with the version from the hotfix. - Replace the Ccmcore.exe and Clicore.exe files in the
Sms_root_folder\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Base\Platformfolder with the versions from the hotfix. - Replace the Compver.ini file in the
Sms_root_folder\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\SWDist folder with the Compverswdist.ini file from the hotfix. Note that you must rename the Compverswdist.ini file to Compver.ini. - Replace the Compver.ini file in the
Sms_root_folder\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Smsapm32 folder with the Compversmsapm32.ini file from the hotfix. Note that you must rename the Compversmsapm32.ini file to Compver.ini. - Replace the Compver.ini file in the
Sms_root_folder\Inboxes\Clicomp.src\Base folder with the Compverbase.ini file from the hotfix. Note that you must rename the Compverbase.ini file to Compver.ini. - Restart the SMS services.
