SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the WWW Publishing service for Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

Could not start the WWW Publishing Service. Error 1008. An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Replace the current c:\Winnt\System32\Inetsrv\Metabase.bin file with a backup copy of the file, and then try to start the service.
  2. Use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to remove IIS, and then reinstall IIS.
