SUMMARY

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Word 2002. This article describes the issues that are corrected in this update.

NOTE: This Public Update is part of the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2), but for your convenience the Public Update also is available individually, as described in the "More Information" section of this article. How to Download and Install the Update

Client Update

If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have two options:

Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all of the latest updates that includes all available Service Packs and Public Updates.

-or-
Install only public update by using the steps described below.

Both options require that you have your Office XP CD-ROM available throughout the installation process.

Office Product Updates

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install Only Word 2002 Update

This update requires that Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) be installed.

Follow these steps to download and install the client update:

Using your Web browser, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:

Click here to download the Client Update
Click Download Now. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
Click Save to save the Wrd1003.exe file to the selected folder.
In Windows Explorer, double-click Wrd1003.exe.
If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
Insert your Office XP CD-ROM if you are prompted to do so, and then click OK.
When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.

NOTE: After you install the public update, you cannot uninstall it.

Administrative Update

If you installed Microsoft Word 2002 from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the administrative update:

Browse to the following Microsoft Web site:

Click here to download the Administrative Update
Download the file to your desktop.
In Windows Explorer, double-click Wrd1003a.exe.
Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\Wrd1003a, and then click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
Click Start and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\folder listed above\admin msp file name SHORTFILENAMES=1

where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and

where MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).
To deploy the update to the client workstations, click Start and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box

msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=WORDFiles REINSTALLMODE=vomus

where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and

where MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).

How to Determine Whether the Public Update Is Installed

The Word 2002 Update: April 25, 2002, affects the Winword.exe file. The Word 2002 Update: April 25, 2002, updates the version of Microsoft Word 2002 to version 10.4009.3501. In Microsoft Word, click About Microsoft Word on the Help menu to determine the version that is on your computer.

NOTE: If the Word 2002 Update: April 25, 2002, is already applied to your computer, you receive the following message when you try to install the Word 2002 Update: April 25, 2002:

This update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied.

286857 WD2002: Dialog Box Does Not Open After You Start Word from Quick Launch Taskbar

When you attempt to open a dialog box in Microsoft Word, the dialog box does not open. Instead, the Word title bar flashes, and the minimized document icon on the taskbar flashes. You cannot type text, click another Word command, or quit Word.

287004 WD2002: Hyperlinks in Merged HTML E-mail Message Do Not Work

When you merge a Web page to e-mail in Microsoft Word 2002 by using the HTML mail format, hyperlinks in the e-mail message do not work.

In addition, the following issues have been fixed in this update but are not documented in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WD: "Custom Popup 1" Is Displayed on Windows Taskbar

When you open a document based on a custom template that contains custom menu items and you click a menu item, several minimized windows may appear in the taskbar. These windows are identified as "Custom Popup 1", "Custom Popup 2", and so on.

WD: "Error! No Table of Contents Entries Found" When You Use the \T Switch and Regional Settings Are Not English (U.S.)

The \t switch, which allows you to build a table of contents from custom styles, does not work if your regional settings are set to a language other than English. You receive the error message "Error! No table of contents entries found." If you remove the \t switch, the TOC is updated, but it defaults to a TOC that is based on heading styles.

WD: Arabic Fonts Change Point Size in Word

In Arabic Word 97, the default font size for Latin text is 10 pt, and the default font size for RTL text (Arabic text) is 12 pt. When a document is created with this default font size for Arabic text, and the document is opened in a later version of Word, the Arabic text appears in font size 10 pt, just as the Latin text does.

WD2002: Small Caps Are Removed When Features Later Than Word 97 Are Turned Off During Save

If you save a document in Word 2002, and the Disable features introduced after Word 97 check box on the Save tab is selected, some Word 97 features (such as small caps or animated text) are turned off. You receive a warning dialog box that displays this message. This does not occur in Word 2000.

WD: Line Numbering Is Incorrectly Positioned When You Use a Right-to-Left Language

When you use line numbering in a right-to-left language document, the last line number on a page sometimes is printed about .5" to the left of where you expect it to be.

WD2002: Continuous Page Break Changes to "Next Page" After You Run a Macro

When you run a macro that sets the page orientation, continuous section breaks change to "next page" section breaks.

WD2002: Word Stops Responding When You Paste Form Field Text into Another Form Field

If you copy the contents of a form field and paste it into another form field in a document created in Word 97, the action causes Word 2002 to stop responding immediately after the paste.

WD: RestartNumberingAtSection in Macro Does Not Retain Set Value

Under certain conditions, multiple Word object properties do not retain the values that were explicitly set in a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro. The problem seems to occur when range properties are read from certain objects, such as the Information object.

WD2002: Paragraph Incorrectly Marked as Changed When You Use "Compare and Merge Documents"

When you compare documents in Word 2002, if a paragraph is inserted or deleted, the entire paragraph after that paragraph is marked as changed.

WD: Setting the OnAction Property of a Custom Shortcut Menu Causes an Insufficient Memory Error Message

You receive an insufficient memory error message and Word may stop responding if you click a custom shortcut menu that has applied menu text. This problem occurs when the OnAction property is set in a VBA macro.

WD: Comment Bubble Disappears When "Allow Row to Break Across Page" Is Not Selected in a Table

A comment bubble disappears under the following conditions:

You insert a comment into a table cell.
The row height of the cell is set to an exact value.
The Allow row to break across page check box is not selected.

WD2002: Error Message, Word Stop Responding When You Paste Table Cells with "Disable Features Introduced After Word 97" Selected

If the Disable features introduced after Word 97 check box is selected (on the Tools menu, click Options), Paste as table cells is disabled on the Edit menu. Also, if you use Paste Special (on the Edit menu) and paste the table cells as HTML or RTF, Word may stop responding.

WD2002: HTML E-mail Messages Can Contain ActiveX Objects That Ignore Security Settings

When you use Word as your e-mail editor and you reply to or forward a Microsoft Outlook message that contains an ActiveX control, the script may be run.

WD: CPU Usage Is High After You Open a Document That Contains Smart Tags

When you open a Word document that contains a paragraph with more than 5,000 characters, Word may consume 100% of the CPU time.
