SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to install Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) to a Windows 2000-based server. WINS provides name resolution of Internet protocol (IP) addresses to NetBIOS names. WINS automatically maintains a database that contains the mappings between IP addresses and NetBIOS (host or friendly) names. WINS is a replacement for the LMHosts file that requires manual configuration.

Before you begin this procedure, you must have the following information:

• The DHCP and a DHCP scope
• The host name or friendly name that you want to assign for your server
• The IP address that you have assigned for your WINS server.
• The subnet mask for your server
• The default gateway for your server
• The IP address of your preferred DNS server
• The IP address of your alternate DNS server if you have one.

How to Configure WINS

The procedure that you use to install WINS includes two steps; in the first step, you configure the TCP/IP settings for your server, and in the second step, you install WINS.

NOTE: The IP addresses that are listed in the following procedure are part of the private addressing for TCP/IP. They are used for internal networks and do not function on the Internet. These addresses are used only as an example. If you do not have an alternate DNS server, leave the Alternate DNS server box blank. If your network has only one subnet, leave the Default gateway box blank.

To configure TCP/IP settings for a WINS server:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. Click Use the following IP address.
5. In the IP address box, type an IP address, for example, 172.16.32.11.
6. In the Subnet mask box, type the subnet mask of your network, for example, 255.255.255.0.
7. In the Default gateway box, type the IP address of an appropriate router, for example, 172.16.32.1.

To configure the DNS settings for the WINS server:

1. Click Use the following DNS servers addresses.
2. In the Preferred DNS server box, type the DNS server IP address, for example, 172.16.4.11.
3. In the Alternate DNS server box, type the IP address of an alternate DNS server if one is available, for example, 172.16.8.11.
4. Click Advanced, click the WINS tab, and then click Add.
5. Type the same IP address assigned to the server, for example, in this case, type 172.16.32.11, and then click Add.
6. Click OK, click OK, click OK, and then close Network and Dial-up Connections.

How to Install WINS

NOTE: To complete the following procedure, log on as a local administrator.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
2. After the Windows Components Wizard starts, click Networking Services (not the check box), and then click Details.
3. On the Networking Services page, click Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), and then click OK.
4. Click Next.
5. When you are prompted, insert the Windows 2000 Server operating system CD, or specify the network path to the installation files for Windows 2000 Server, and then click Next.
6. Click Finish, and then click Close.
7. Close Control Panel.
