Message Builder Fails to Start with Event IDs 16392 and 16409

SYMPTOMS

The Message Builder service on your Windows NT Server-based computer fails to start, and the Event Viewer logs the following event messages:

ID: 16392
Source: msgbldsvc
Desc: The Message Builder Service failed to start. Check to see if the service is installed properly.

ID: 16409
Source: msgbldsvc
Desc: Message Builder failed to initialize packageq qeueue at .

NOTE: The misspellings in event ID 16409 is the actual text of the description.

CAUSE

One or more metabase keys for the Direct Mail service are missing or corrupt.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use MetaEdit version 2.1 to correct the Direct Mail values. For additional information on MetaEdit, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After MetaEdit is installed, do the following:

  1. Open MetaEdit, and then expand the LM key.
  2. Select the TMailer key. The two values to edit are indicated with ID numbers 1 and 4.
  3. Double-click each of these items to edit them as follows:

    1 - <Microsoft Site Server>\Data\Knowledge\Membership\Direct Mail Package Queue
    4 - C:\WINNT\System32\LOGFILES\Direct Mail Logs
  4. Close MetaEdit, and then start the Message Builder service.
