How to Input Japanese Characters by Using Microsoft Japanese IME 2000

To input characters by using the Japanese IME 2000, follow these steps:

  1. Start Word.
  2. Click the keyboard indicator that is located in the notification area on the taskbar, and then click Microsoft IME 2000 (Japanese). The Japanese IME 2000 toolbar appears.
  3. Click Input Mode (the first button on the left), and then click Hiragana from the list that appears.
  4. Start typing in Hiragana (phonetic). For example, type the word tora (tiger).

The Japanese Hiragana characters are displayed in the document.

  1. Press SPACEBAR once.

The Hiragana characters change to Kanji characters. You might think of Kanji as symbols that represent the meaning of a word instead of a symbols that are phonetic representation of the word.

  1. Press SPACEBAR a second time.

You see a "Candidate List" that allows you to choose among alternate versions of the word in Kanji, Hiragana, or Katakana.

  1. To select the characters that you want from the list, press the arrow keys. Alternately, you can press the corresponding number on your keyboard, which is displayed next to the character in the list. The character now appears in your document.

NOTE: In step 2, you can change the Input Mode to other forms of input, including the following:

  • Katakana
  • Full-Width Katakana
  • Full-Width ASCII
  • Half-Width Katakana
  • Half-Width ASCII
