SYMPTOMS

The Language indicator is missing from the Word status bar.

CAUSE

The Language indicator appears on the status bar only when at least one of the following is true:

  • Language support for more than one language is installed.


For example, if you have support for both English (U.S.) and English (U.K.) installed.

-or-

  • Keyboard drivers for more than one language are installed.


RESOLUTION

To turn on the Language indicator on the status bar, do one of the following:

  • You can install language support for additional languages using the Microsoft Office Language Settings. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Language Settings.
    2. On the Enabled Languages tab, click to select the language you want to add, and then click OK.

    -or-

  • You can install keyboard drivers for additional languages by using the Windows Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Keyboard.
    3. On the Language tab, click Add.
    4. In the Add Language dialog box, change the Language box to the language you want to add, and then click OK.

      NOTE: Your selected language now appears in the Language list on the Language tab of the Keyboard Properties dialog box.
    5. Click OK to close the Keyboard Properties dialog box.

The status bar in Microsoft Word 2000 can display a language indicator that shows the language in which the current selection is formatted. The language indicator is located between the overtype indicator and the spelling and grammar checking indicator.
