SYMPTOMS

When you click Spelling and Grammar on the Tools menu to check the spelling in your Word document, you may receive an error message similar to one of the following:

Word cannot find the spelling file Msspell3.dll or Msp232.dll for English US.

Word cannot find the spelling file <filename> for <language>.

CAUSE

These error messages may appear for one of two possible reasons:

Case 1

The proofing tools that are included with Word 2000 are not installed.

Case 2

The appropriate language proofing tools are not installed for the particular language in which you are trying to check spelling and grammar.

NOTE: Not all language proofing tools contain grammar tools.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods appropriate for your situation.

Method 2: Obtain the Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools

The English version of Microsoft Word 2000 comes with proofing tools for English, Spanish, and French. To check spelling in other languages, use the Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools. These proofing tools provide the fonts, localized templates, and spelling and grammar checkers you need to create and edit documents in different languages when using Word. Other items in the proofing tools are AutoCorrect lists, AutoSummarize rules, and (for Asian languages) Global Input Method Editors (Global IMEs).

The Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools can be obtained from a licensed reseller (CD assy: X03-80950; SKU: 053-00200).
