SUMMARY

Outlook works with the Microsoft Windows 95 Fax service. However, to do so, the Windows Fax service must first be installed and working properly so Outlook setup can update certain files correctly.

NOTE: The installation and removal of Windows Messaging and Microsoft Fax differ if you are using Microsoft Windows 98. The two components appear separately on the Add/Remove list on the Install/Uninstall tab, instead of the Windows Setup tab.

The Microsoft Fax service must be installed in the proper order to work properly with Outlook. To ensure the proper installation order:

Remove Outlook

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Outlook 98, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. In the Maintenance Wizard, click Remove Outlook 98.
  5. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.

Remove Microsoft Exchange and the Microsoft Fax Service

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Click to clear the Microsoft Exchange or Windows Messaging check box, depending on the version of Windows you are using.
  5. Click to clear the Microsoft Fax check box. Click OK.

Reinstall Exchange and the Fax Service

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Click to select the Microsoft Exchange check box.
  5. Click to select the Microsoft Fax check box. Click OK.
  6. Test Microsoft Fax to ascertain that it is working properly.

If Microsoft Fax is not working, it will not behave properly in Outlook. Remove and reinstall Microsoft Fax and Exchange.

Reinstall Outlook

  1. Insert the Outlook 98 compact disc in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Run Active Setup and select the options you wish to install.
  3. After restarting your system, test the functionality of Outlook and Microsoft Fax.
