This article describes how to remove and reinstall Microsoft Fax with Windows Messaging, Microsoft Outlook 97, or the Microsoft Outlook 98 Corporate Workgroup installations. Note that you must follow the steps for your version of Windows in sequence to successfully reinstall Microsoft Fax.

How to Record Properties of the Current Services

Before you make any changes to your computer settings, it is important to gather the information for each service that is currently installed:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Mail and Fax or Mail, click the first item in the The following information services are set up in the profile box, click Properties, and then write down the information. Follow this step for each service that is listed.

Modem Connection

Verify that your modem is working properly. Use your connection to the Internet as a quick test to verify that your modem is working properly. If you do not have an Internet connection, run a diagnostics test:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Modems, and then verify that your modem is listed on the General tab.
  3. Click Diagnostics, click the COM port that your modem is attached to, and then click More Info.


NOTE: If the More Info dialog box appears without an error message and displays a series of "AT" commands and responses, the modem has passed a diagnostics test.

How to Remove the Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging Components

To remove the Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging components, use one of the following methods, depending on your version of Windows.

Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, click Details, click to clear the WordPad check box, click to clear the Imaging check box, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab, click either Windows Messaging or Exchange, click Add/Remove, and then follow the instructions on the screen to remove the program.
  4. Click Microsoft Fax, click Add/Remove, follow the instructions on the screen to remove the program, click OK, and then restart your computer.

Windows 95

  1. Right-click Recycle Bin on your desktop, click Empty Recycle Bin, and then click Yes.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, click Details, click to clear the WordPad check box, click to clear the Imaging check box, and then click OK.
  4. Click to clear the Microsoft Fax check box, click to clear either the Windows Messaging or Exchange check box, click OK, and then restart your computer.

How to Remove the Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging Files

After you remove the programs by following the steps in one of the previous sections, remove the Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging files:

  1. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.
  2. At a command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:

    deltree /y forms

    -and-

    exit

  4. After you verify that the Show All Files option is enabled, rename the following files with an .xxx file name extension. Note that after you successfully reinstall and test Microsoft Fax, you can delete the files that you renamed. To rename a file, right-click the file, click Rename, type the new file name, and then press ENTER.

Rename the following files in the Windows\System folder with an .xxx file name extension:

How to Install Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging

To install Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging, use on of the following methods, depending on your operating system.

Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, click Details, click to select the WordPad check box, click to select the Imaging check box, click OK, and then click OK.
  3. Insert your Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Click Browse This CD, and then locate the Tools\OldWin95\Message\US folder.
  4. Double-click the Wms.exe program file, follow the instructions on the screen to install Windows Messaging, remove the Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM from your CD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
  5. Place your Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Click Browse This CD, and then locate the Tools\OldWin95\Message\US folder.
  6. Double-click the Awfax.exe program file, follow the instructions on the screen to install Microsoft Fax, and then restart your computer.

Window 95

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Windows Setup tab, click to select the Microsoft Fax check box (you may receive a message about installing Windows Messaging, Imaging, and WordPad), click OK, and then restart your computer.
  3. Double-click Recycle Bin on your desktop, and then click Select All on the Edit menu.
  4. Click click Restore on the File menu, click No in the file replacement messages, and then close the Recycle Bin dialog box.

How to Install Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging with Outlook 97 or Outlook 98

To install Microsoft Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 in Corporate Workgroup (CW) mode:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the program that you want to install, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. Follow the directions on the screen, choose to reinstall components, click OK, and then restart your computer.

How to Verify the Installed Services

For the Microsoft Fax program to work properly, you must install the Personal Folders, Personal Address Book, and Microsoft Fax services. To verify that these services are installed, verify that either the Mail and Fax or Mail tools are listed in Control Panel:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click either Mail and Fax or Mail. If the Inbox Wizard starts, click Microsoft Fax Service, and then click OK.


NOTE: If you connect to Microsoft Mail, click Microsoft Mail and configure it according to the notes that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section at the beginning of this article.

  1. Click Personal Address Book, click Properties, browse to the location of the .pab file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click Open, and then click OK.
  2. Click Personal Folders, click Properties, browse to the location of the .pst file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click Open, and then click OK.

If the Personal Folders, Personal Address Book, and Microsoft Fax services are missing, add each service:

  1. Click Add, click Personal Folders, and then click OK.
  2. Browse to the .pst file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click the .pst file, click Open, and then click OK.
  3. Click Add, click Personal Address Book, and then click OK.
  4. Browse to the .pab file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click the .pab file, click Open, and then click OK.
  5. Click Add, click Microsoft Fax, and then click OK.
