SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the Microsoft Office programs, the program unexpectedly quits immediately after it starts.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do all of the following:

  • You have the Beta 2 version (build 2221B) of Office installed. -and-

  • You install the released version of Office without first removing the Beta 2 version. -and-

  • You click Continue to the following error message during the installation:

    Setup has detected a pre-release version of an Office 2000 family application installed on this computer. You must exit setup and uninstall the pre-release software before you install this released version. If you choose Continue, Office 2000 may not install properly.

This problem may also occur if the ProductID string value in the following registry key is present, but the value data is empty (appears as "" in the Data column):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{GUID}

{GUID} in the preceding registry key is actually a 32-character string that varies according to the version of Office 2000 that you installed. For example, the {GUID} for Office Premium is:

{00000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To successfully install the released version of Office, remove the Beta 2 version of Office by following these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel.
  2. Click to select Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Edition in the list, and click Add/Remove.
  3. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Remove Office.
  4. If you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.

If the ProductID value in the registry key is empty, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Find the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

    If you find only one subkey that has a 32 character {GUID}, select that subkey and go to Step 4.

    If you have more than one subkey that has a 32 character {GUID}, select each one until you find the one whose DisplayName value matches your version of Office.
  4. For the selected {GUID} subkey, select the ProductID string value.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Rename.
  6. Type OldProductID and press Enter.
  7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  8. Start any one of the Office programs.
  9. When the Microsoft Office 2000 User Information dialog box appears, type your CD Key. Follow the instructions on your screen.

STATUS
