SUMMARY

The purpose of this article is to provide troubleshooting assistance for some of the common error messages and problems encountered while using the Setup Computer Wizard (SCW) that is included with Backoffice Small Business Server (SBS).

MORE INFORMATION

  • SCW creates a Client Setup Floppy Disk by getting the files for the floppy from %SystemRoot%\SmallBusiness\Clients\Floppy. If the Floppy folder or the files within the Floppy folder are missing, SCW may display one of the two following error messages:

Error 3 occurred attempting to open c:\smallbusiness\floppy\netparam.ini for writing.

Error 2 occurred attempting to open c:\smallbusiness\floppy\netparam.ini for writing.

    To resolve this error:

    1. Insert the Small Business Server compact disc 3.
    2. Change to the following folder on disc 3:

      \SBSADMIN\I386\SCW

    3. Copy the Floppy subfolder to %SystemRoot%\SmallBusiness.
  • If the currently logged on user does not have read/write access to the files within the Floppy folder, the following error message may be displayed:

Error 5 occurred attempting to open c:\smallbusiness\floppy\netparam.ini for writing.

To resolve this error, modify the permissions on the %SystemRoot%\SmallBusiness\Floppy folder so that the currently logged on user has Full Control.

This error is also caused by the %SystemRoot%\SmallBusiness\Floppy\Netparam.ini file being set to read only. In Windows Explorer, make sure Read-Only check box is cleared.
  • The Setup Computer Wizard (SCW) is a standalone application that can be run independent of the SBS Console. The program can be started by running Scw.exe from the SmallBusiness folder. All the files necessary for SCW to run are located within the SmallBusiness folder. If SCW fails to start, or stops with a fatal error, it may be because some of the SCW files are either missing or are corrupted.

    To reinstall the SCW files:
    1. Insert the Small Business Server compact disc 3.
    2. Change to the following folder on disc 3:

      \SBSADMIN\I386\SCW

    3. Copy the files within the BIN subfolder to %SystemRoot%\SmallBusiness.
    4. Copy the Floppy and Template subfolders to %SystemRoot%\SmallBusiness.
