SUMMARY

Small Business Server comes preconfigured with a private address 10.0.0.2 and this is hard coded in the default configuration of various related services. This configuration is very suitable for most situations and should be left alone unless there is a justifiable reason to change it.

If the default IP address is changed without modifying the other services, error messages similar to the following examples may be displayed:

  • Event 7024
    Source: Service Control Manager (SCM)
    Type: Error
Description: The Microsoft WinSock Proxy Service service terminated with service-specific error 213000.Event 17
    Source: WinSockProxy (WSP)
    Type: Error
Description: Incorrect network configuration. None of server's addresses are internal.Event 1
    Source: WinSockProxy (WSP)
    Type: Error
Description: WinSock Proxy Service failed to initialize. The data is the internal error code.
    Data: 00034008 (in Word or 08 40 03 00 in Byte)

MORE INFORMATION

If you must deviate from the default configuration, the following additional steps would have to be performed to make the necessary changes in various other services for them to continue to function properly.

IP Address Properties

  1. Change the IP address and subnet mask to the new preferred IP and subnet.
  2. If this computer contains two or more network cards, the card connecting to the router should be configured with a default gateway (the router's)address. All others should be left blank.
  3. If it is not connected to a router, the Default Gateway option should be left blank.
  4. Both the primary and secondary WINS address fields should be populated with the new address of the internal card. The WINS addresses for the external card can be left blank. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  5. If you have the Remote Access service (RAS) or Routing and Remote Access service (RRAS) set up to receive TCP/IP dial-in clients, your server should have an Lmhosts file with the following entry

    x.x.x.x JSPNRMPTGSBSSDIR #PRE

where x.x.x.x is an IP address that is associated with the RAS server's internal network adapter. This address should be changed to the new IP address. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: Do not restart the computer if prompted at this time.

DHCP Changes to Be Made

Make the following changes in DHCP Manager:

  3. Specify a valid start and end IP addresses for the new scope along with the subnet mask.
  4. The exclusion range should be configured to reflect all addresses that are statically assigned or needs to be kept aside for future static assignment.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Yes, when prompted to activate the newly created scope. Commonly used options like 03 Router, 15 Domain Name, 44 WINS NBNS server, and 46 WINS/NBT Node Type can be defined at this time, if necessary.
