SYMPTOMS

When you run Windows 98 Setup from within Windows, the ScanDisk portion of Setup may take an unusually long time to check your hard disks.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are loading the DosIdle version 2.00 program in your Autoexec.bat file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, disable DosIdle before you install Windows 98:

  1. Restart your computer, press and hold the CTRL key until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then choose Command Prompt Only.
  2. At the command prompt, type edit autoexec.bat, and then press ENTER.
  3. Disable the line that loads the Dosidle.exe file. To do so, type rem and then press the SPACEBAR at the beginning of the line.
  4. Press ALT+F, press S (to save), press ALT+F, and then press X (to exit).
  5. Restart your computer normally, and then run Windows 98 Setup.
