Video Display Problems After You Install Program

SYMPTOMS

When you install one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • When you restart the computer after you install the program, your computer may stop responding (hang) during the reboot, or it may start in Safe mode.
  • When you restart the computer, Microsoft Windows 95/98 may start in 16-color VGA mode.
  • When you restart the computer, you see the Windows logo, and then you may see a blank screen.
  • After you restart the computer, you may see a black screen or horizontal lines running across your display, and the computer may stop responding (hang).



CAUSE

This behavior can occur for the following reasons:

  • The driver for your video adapter is incompatible with DirectX.
  • When you install the program, your video color palette is set to High Color (16 bit), and your video resolution is set to 1024 X 768.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

If you can start Windows, proceed to step 2. If you cannot start Windows, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Windows to restart your computer in Safe mode.




Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Turn off the computer, wait ten seconds, and then turn it on.
  2. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key.
  3. On the Startup menu, select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
  4. When Windows starts in Safe mode, click OK.

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Turn off the computer, wait ten seconds, and then turn it on.
  2. When the computer finishes the power on self test (POST), press and hold down CTRL until you see the Windows Startup menu.
  3. On the Startup menu, select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
  4. When Windows starts in Safe mode, click OK.

Change the video driver to the Standard Video Adapter (VGA) driver. To do this, use the appropriate method for your version of Windows.




Windows 95 retail or OEM Service Release 2 (OSR-2)

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. On the Settings tab, click Change Display Type (retail) or Advanced Properties (OSR-2).
  4. Under Adapter Type, note the name of your current video driver, and then click Change (retail), or on the Adapter tab, note the name of your current video driver, and then click Change (OSR-2).
  5. Click Show All Devices.
  6. In the Manufacturers box, click (Standard Display Types).
  7. In the Models box, click Standard Display Adapter (VGA), and then click OK.
  8. Click Close, and then click Close again.
  9. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Windows 98

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
  4. On the Adapter tab, note the name of your current video driver, and then click Change.
  5. Click Next, click "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want," and then click Next.
  6. Click Show All Devices.
  7. In the Manufacturers box, click (Standard Display Types).
  8. In the Models box, click Standard Display Adapter (VGA), and then click OK.
  9. Click Next three times, and then click Finish.
  10. Click Close, and then click Close again.
  11. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

When Windows restarts in Normal mode, repeat step 2 to change the video driver back to the original video driver, and then restart the computer.




Contact your hardware manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest DirectX-compatible version of the driver for your video adapter.
