Installing International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0

To successfully install International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0, you must install it over the released version of Internet Explorer 2.0. International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0 can be installed in any language version of Windows 95 or any language version of Internet Explorer 2.0.

If you attempt to install International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0 over Internet Explorer 1.0 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 2.0, you receive the following error message:

IE2.0i Upgrade Error
Newer version of Internet Explorer Must be installed.

Determining If Internet Explorer 2.0i Is Installed

To determine which version of Internet Explorer you are using, click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. If the version reported is 2.0 (4.40.607), you are using International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0 (Internet Explorer 2.0i). You can also determine the version of Internet Explorer by confirming the presence of the following files.

International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0 replaces the following files.

Content Displayed in Non-native Character Sets May Slow Performance

Internet Explorer uses Unicode Application Programming Interface (API) calls to display Internet content in non-native character sets. This may cause a performance degradation for content in non-native character sets. For example, displaying Japanese content in English Windows 95 is slower than displaying English content in English Windows 95 or displaying Japanese content in Japanese Windows 95.

Note that there is no performance degradation when you view English content in English Windows 95 after installing International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0.

English Language User Interface for Internet Explorer Is Installed

By installing International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0, you install an English language user interface for Internet Explorer. If this is unacceptable to you, you can reinstall your localized version of Internet Explorer 2.0. However, International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0 no longer work if you do so.

Microsoft Office User Interface May Appear with Japanese Characters

If you use Korean Windows 95 and you add Japanese support to International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0, parts of the Microsoft Office for Windows 95 user interface may appear with Japanese characters.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Office for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Character Set Box Does Not Contain European Languages

It is not necessary to select the following European languages in the character set box:

Danish
Dutch
French
German
Italian
Norwegian
Portuguese
Spanish
Swedish

You can view the characters for these languages by using the Western (US- ASCII) character set.

The Computer No Longer Starts Under Traditional Chinese Windows 95

If you use Traditional Chinese Windows 95 and you add Japanese or Korean support to International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0, your computer will no longer start (boot). To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Click Start and click Shut Down on the Start Menu. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click "Restart the Compter in MS-DOS Mode?" and then click Yes.
At the MS-DOS prompt, type the following

cd\<windows>\fonts

where <windows> is the name of the folder in which you installed Windows, and then press ENTER.
Type the following

del msgothic.ttf

(for Japanese support) or type the following

del gulim.ttf

(for Korean support) to delete either file.
Type exit and press ENTER to restart Windows 95.

Removing International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0

To remove International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0, follow these steps.

NOTE: These steps remove Internet Explorer 2.0 as well as Internet Explorer 2.0i. To use Internet Explorer 2.0, you must reinstall it.

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Click the Install/Uninstall tab, click Internet Explorer V2.0 in the list of programs, and then click Add/Remove.

The following files are not automatically removed by this process because they may be used by another program. If this is not the case, you can delete them manually:

Cp_932.nls (Installed with Japanese support only)
Cp_949.nls (Installed with Korean support only)
Cp_20866.nls
Cp_28592.nls
Gulim.ttf (Installed with Korean support only)
Msgothic.ttf (Installed with Japanese support only)

NOTE: If you receive an "Access Denied" error message when you try to delete the .nls files, restart your computer before you delete the files, or restart your computer in Command Prompt Only mode and then delete the files. For more information about restarting the computer in Command Prompt Only mode, see the "The Computer No Longer Starts Under Traditional Chinese Windows 95" section in this article.

Known Limitations in International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0

The following items are known limitations in International Extensions for Internet Explorer 2.0:

The Internet Explorer 2.0i title bar does not display the page title in the correct character set.
Forms elements are not displayed in the correct character set. For example, when you use a Japanese form in English Windows 95, the buttons and boxes contain garbled characters.
You cannot enter Asian characters into forms.
You cannot enter text in a character set that is not a Windows character set. In other words, forms on pages that do not have an ANSI character set cannot be filled by using an available keyboard driver in European versions of Windows 95.
Internet Explorer 2.0i cannot be installed to a shared installation of Windows 95 (in which most Windows files are installed on the server). Although it appears to be installed correctly, Internet Explorer 2.0i does not function properly.
