SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a video clip in any one of the Microsoft Encarta programs listed in the "Applies To" section, the clip does not play. The first frame of video appears, but then goes black. The sound for the video continues to play.

CAUSE

This issue may occur with an incompatible, a beta, or a corrupted installation of Microsoft Windows Media Player.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1: Remove Encarta and Windows Media Player

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select your Encarta program in the list, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the prompts to remove the program.
  5. When Encarta has been removed, select Windows Media Player, and then click Remove.
  6. Follow the prompts to remove the program.
  7. Restart the computer.

Method 2: Install the latest version of Windows Media Player

To obtain the latest version of Windows Media Player, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Method 3: Install Encarta

To install Encarta, follow the instructions that are included with your version of Encarta.
