SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Microsoft Office 2003 program, you may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:

Automatic Recovery protects your computer if setup fails. There is not enough disk space on the drive highlighted below to store the Automatic Recovery data. This data is temporary and will be deleted when setup completes.

The highlighted volumes do not have enough disk space available for the currently selected features.

Error 1307 There is not enough disk space to install this file. Free some disk space and click 'Retry', or click 'Cancel' to exit.

You may receive this error message after the Preparing to Install progress indicator reaches the halfway point.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you try to install Office 2003 on a computer that does not have sufficient free hard disk space to perform the installation on the partition (or volume) where Microsoft Windows is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1: Remove Programs to Create More Available Hard Disk Space

To create more available hard disk space on the drive where Windows is installed, use the Add/Remove Programs tool to remove programs that you do not use. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add/Remove Programs.
3. In the list of installed programs, click a program that you do not use, and then click Remove or Change/Remove.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen to completely remove the program.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to remove each program that you do not use.

Method 2: Use the Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard to Create More Available Hard Disk Space

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
2. When Disk Cleanup has completed calculating the disk space that can be freed by the cleanup process, click to select the check box for each file that you want to delete, and then click OK.

Method 3: Move the Pagefile.sys File to a Different Partition

The paging file is the area on the hard disk that Windows uses as random access memory (RAM). This area is sometimes known as "virtual memory." By default, Windows stores this file on the same partition as the Windows system files. You can increase the performance of Windows, and increase free space on the boot partition, by moving this file to a different partition. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Log on to the computer as the administrator.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click System.
3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then in the Performance pane, click Settings.
4. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then in the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
5. In the Drive [Volume Label] list, click a drive other than the one where Windows is installed (Windows is typically installed on drive C).
6. Under Total paging file size for all drives, note the value that is displayed next to Recommended.
7. Click Custom size, and then type the recommended value in the Initial size (MB) box.
8. Type the maximum size that you want to permit for paging in the Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
9. In the Drive [Volume Label] box, click the drive where Windows is installed (typically drive C), and then follow one of these steps:
   • If you do not want a paging file on the drive, click No paging file, and then click Set. You receive a message that is similar to the following message:

     If the pagefile on volume C: has an initial size of less than 126 megabytes, then the system may not be able to create a debugging information file if a Stop error occurs. Continue anyway?

     Click Yes.
   • If you want to keep the minimum size of the paging file on the drive, click Custom size, and then type a value that is equal to or greater than the RAM in the computer in the Initial size (MB) box. Type the same value in the Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.

   You receive a message that is similar to the following message:

   The changes you have made require you to restart your computer before they can take effect.

10. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
