SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Office XP, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Insufficient Disk Space
The highlighted volumes do not have enough disk space available for the currently selected features.

The error message dialog box displays hard-disk space information, and your only option is to click OK.

Error 25202

Cannot install portions of the required System Files Update: Internet Explorer 5. You can try installing Internet Explorer by running IE5Setup.exe from the IE5 folder located on your CD, or contact your technical support group, administrator, or Microsoft Product Support for more assistance.

When you click OK, the Setup program quits.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you try to install Office on a computer that does not have sufficient hard-disk space to accommodate the installation on the partition (volume) on which Microsoft Windows is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate to your situation.

Method 1: Make More Free Space Available on the Hard Disk

Before continuing with the installation of Office, you must free more hard-disk space on the drive on which the operating system is installed. For example, an installation of Microsoft Office XP may require up to 425 megabytes (MB) of disk space on the drive on which Windows is installed, depending on the Office products being installed and on your computer's configuration.

To remove programs that are no longer required, use the Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the program that you want to uninstall, and then click Add/Remove.

Method 2: Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to a Different Partition

NOTE: This method applies only if your version of Internet Explorer is earlier than version 5.01.

By default, Internet Explorer is installed to the partition on which Windows is installed. By installing Internet Explorer before you install Office, Internet Explorer can be installed to a partition other than the drive partition on which Windows is installed. This requires less free space on the Windows partition and may allow for the installation of Office to an alternate partition.

NOTE: The version of Internet Explorer included with Office XP will not be installed on Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), because these operating systems already include a later version of Internet Explorer.

To install Internet Explorer to an alternate partition before you install Office, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following in the Open box

    drive letter:\FILES\OSP\1033\IE5\EN\IE5SETUP.EXE

where drive letter is the letter for your computer's CD-ROM drive. Click OK to continue.
  2. Accept the agreement and click Next.
  3. Click Install Minimal, or customize your browser, and then click Next.
  4. In the Folder to install Internet Explorer to box, type the path to the alternate partition. You may also click Browse to navigate to the alternate partition. Make any other changes to the installation, and then click Next.

Internet Explorer is now installed to the alternate partition but may still require approximately 40 MB of free space on your Windows drive.

If you now install Office to an alternate partition, the partition on which Windows is installed will require approximately 380 MB of free hard-disk space. Windows requires additional free space beyond this amount for normal operation.

Method 3: Install Office Without Internet Explorer

Method 3 allows you to install the Office programs and bypass installing Internet Explorer. Note that if the version of Internet Explorer that is currently installed is earlier than the required version of Internet Explorer 5.01, a minimal installation of Internet Explorer 5.01 will be installed, in order to run the Office browsing components.

To install Office XP without installing Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Run, and then type the following in the Open box

    drive letter:\SETUP.EXE NOIE=TRUE

where drive letter is the letter for your computer's CD-ROM drive. Click OK to continue.

  2. Continue through the Setup program, and select the options as you normally would to install the Office components.

MORE INFORMATION

A complete installation of Office XP can require up to 425 MB of free space on the partition on which Windows is installed, even if Office is installed to an alternate partition. This space is required for shared Office feature files, Internet Explorer 5.0, Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), fonts, shared dynamic-link library (DLL) files, and other necessary system files installed by the System Files Update operation. The space requirements vary, depending on the Office products being installed and on your computer's configuration.
