SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to install the Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 Service Pack 1a by downloading it from the Internet.

Verify Disk Space

Before you start the installation of Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a (SBS 2000 SP1a), make sure that you have enough free space to complete the installation. To check space requirements, visit the following Microsoft download site:

Install Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a

  1. To download the Small Business Server 2000 SP1a package (SBSSP1a.exe), visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. After you click the download link for SBSSP1a.exe, click Save.

    This starts the download process. The file is approximately 293 MB.
  3. After the download is complete, stop any antivirus software that is running on the server. Also stop any services or programs that you do not have to have running on the server.
  4. Double-click the SBSSP1a.exe file.
  5. When the WinZip Self-Extractor - SBSSP1a.exe dialog box appears, click Unzip to extract the service pack files to the folder indicated in the dialog box.

    Note You may have to change the folder indicated under Unzip to folder to another partition, depending on free disk space available on your disk drives.
  6. Click OK to close the message that states that the files were extracted successfully. Click Close to close the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box.
  7. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the folder indicated in step 5. Double-click SP1Setup.exe.
  8. If the server is not running Windows 2000 SP4, click OK when you are prompted to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 as the first portion of the SBS 2000 Service Pack 1a installation.

    The Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Setup Wizard starts.

    If the server is already running Windows 2000 SP4, you will not receive a prompt to install it. In this case, go to step 13.
  9. Click Next to start the installation of Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Setup Wizard. When you are prompted, click Finish to restart the computer.
  10. Log on as Administrator when the computer restarts.
  11. Stop any antivirus software that is running on the server. Also stop any services or programs that you do not have to have running on the server.
  12. Click OK to continue the Microsoft Small Business Service Pack 1a installation.
  13. If the server is not running Exchange 2000 SP3, you will receive a prompt to extract the Exchange 2000 SP3 files. Click Unzip to extract the service pack files to the default location indicated, or use a different location.

    Note By default, the installation extracts the files to C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp. Depending on how much disk space remains on your C partition, you may want to extract the files to another partition.

    If the server is already running Exchange 2000 SP3, you will not receive a prompt to extract the SP3 files. In this case, go to step 20.
  14. Click OK to close the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box after the files are extracted. Click Close to quit the self-extractor.
  15. Start the Exchange 2000 Server SP3 installation by running the Update.exe program from the Server\Setup\I386 subfolder located in the folder that you extracted the service pack to in step 1. By default, this is C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp\Server\Setup\I386\Update.exe.
  16. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Installation Wizard. Click Finish when the service pack installation completes. Restart the computer if you are prompted to do so.
  17. Log on as Administrator when the computer restarts.
  18. Stop any antivirus software that is running on the server. Also stop any services or programs that you do not have to have running on the server.
  19. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the folder indicated in step 5. Double-click SP1Setup.exe.
  20. When Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a setup starts, click Next. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the service pack installation. Click Finish when the service pack completes.
  21. Restart the server.
