SYMPTOMS

When you try to start FrontPage, you receive a message similar to the following:

Installing Microsoft FrontPage feature


Then, you may receive the following error message:

FrontPage is not installed properly - please reinstall.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if any of the following conditions is true:

  • Your FrontPage system files are damaged.
  • You do not have the most current version of Windows Installer.
  • Your copy of Windows Installer is damaged.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following five-part procedure, in the order in which it is presented.

Part 1 - Remove Microsoft FrontPage

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If you installed FrontPage as a stand-alone program, click Microsoft FrontPage, and then click Remove.

      -or-
    • If you installed FrontPage as part of Microsoft Office, click Microsoft Office, click Change, and then follow these steps.
      1. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
      2. Click the symbol next to Microsoft FrontPage for Windows, click Not Available, and then click Update.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove FrontPage.

Part 2 - Delete the FrontPage Files

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. Locate the FrontPage folder. By default, this folder is

    drive:\Program Files\Microsoft\FrontPage

    where drive is the drive on which you installed FrontPage.

    NOTE: This path may vary on your computer.
  3. Right-click the FrontPage folder, and then click Delete.

Part 3 - Delete the FrontPage Registry Keys

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FrontPage

  3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to delete the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FrontPage

NOTE: Windows Installer 2.0 is included with Windows XP.

Part 5 - Reinstall FrontPage

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Do one of the following:
    • If you installed FrontPage as a stand alone program, follow these steps:
      1. Insert the FrontPage CD, and if Setup starts automatically, skip to step 2.
      2. If Setup does not start automatically, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
      3. In the left pane, click Add New Programs, and then click CD or Floppy.
    • If you installed FrontPage as a part of Microsoft Office, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, Click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
      2. Click Microsoft Office, and then click Change.
      3. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
      4. Click the symbol next to Microsoft FrontPage for Windows, click Run all from My Computer, and then click Update.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.
