SUMMARY
The Windows Installer engine must be present in the operating system before a Windows Installer (.msi) package can be installed. This article describes how to obtain and install the Windows Installer Engine if it is not already in the operating system.

The Windows Installer is a new installation engine, and it is part of the operating system for Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition (ME), and Windows XP. It is not included in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. In order to run Windows Installer installation packages on those Windows operating system, the Windows Installer engine must first be installed. The current version of the installation engine is 1.2 and can be obtained from the following Microsoft Web sites:

NOTE: Windows 2000 comes with Windows Installer version 1.1 and cannot be upgrade to version 1.2. Windows Millennium Edition comes with Windows Installer version 1.2, which is the current version. Windows XP contains version 2.0 of the Windows Installer, and all of the platforms mentioned in this article can be upgraded to the 2.0 engine.
