SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Release 1 (SR-1), ideographic characters that are oriented vertically on the drawing page appear closer together than expected. For example, the upper and lower portions of adjacent Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters may either touch or overlap.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You have Microsoft Visio Standard 2002 SR-1 or Microsoft Visio Professional 2002 SR-1.


-and-

  • Your drawing contains Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set (HKSCS) characters or characters that use an End User-Defined Character (EUDC) font.


-and-

  • Text is arranged vertically on the drawing page.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Pack 2.
