SYMPTOMS

When you configure a cluster, the Cluster Configuration Wizard may generate the following error message:

Find Matching Network
The subnet mask could not be supplied automatically for this IP address. Please check the address to make sure it is correct.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you have more than one Internet protocol (IP) address associated with an interface. By default, the first IP address that is bound to the network adapter is used during cluster configuration.

The error message described in the "Summary" section of this article is logged in the Cluster Setup log (%SystemRoot%\System32\LogFiles\Cluster\ClCfgSrv.log) and occurs when the wizard is attempting to find the network interface. This error message may occur if you have Network Teaming or any other type of software that associates more than one IP address with a single physical adaptor.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, verify that the IP address that is on the same local area network (LAN) as the cluster IP address is listed as the first bound address:

  1. Right-click My Network Place, and then click Properties.
  2. Right-click the public network connection, and then click Properties.
  3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Properties, and then click Advanced.
  4. Make a note of all IP addresses and Subnet Masks listed in the IP Addresses section.
  5. In the IP Addresses section, remove all address except for the address that is on the same subnet as the cluster IP address.
  6. Add the other IP address back to the IP Addresses section. Confirm that the correct address is now the first address listed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
