WD2000: Cannot Turn Field Codes On or Off in Protected Document

SYMPTOMS

When your document is protected for forms or comments:

  • The Field codes command is unavailable (dimmed) on the View tab, and you cannot turn field codes on or off.


NOTE: To locate the View tab, click Options on the Tools menu.

-and-

  • You cannot turn field codes on or off using the shortcut keys ALT+F9 or SHIFT+F9.


-and-

  • Your fields are not updated.


CAUSE

In Microsoft Word, if your document is protected for comments or forms, you cannot update field codes or turn field codes on or off.

RESOLUTION

To view, turn on or off, or update field codes for the entire document, you must unprotect the document. To do this, click Unprotect Document on the Tools menu.
