Windows 95 Build 81
Kernel version Windows 9x 4.00
CPU architecture x86
Edition n/a
BIOS date January 21, 1994

Chicago build 81 is the earliest leaked build to use the single Start button by default (but not the earliest leaked build to have it). It is the first leaked build to introduce the famous "X" close button on windows and by this point, the overall UI was mostly done and merely refined in later builds.

If you're installing this build in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004/2007, make sure to select "XGA compatible" as your display adapter during Setup. This build appears to have an issue with S3 and VGA drivers on VPC and will not boot with them. If you want a higher resolution, you can use the Super VGA driver from build 73f/g - just select "Other..." and point to a floppy disk containing files "MSDISP.INF" and "SUPERVGA.DRV" from build 73f/g.

CAB32.exe error

Just like builds 73f and g, this build is also sometimes affected by the "CAB32.exe error". Upon start-up, an error message is displayed, saying the system was unable to load CAB32.exe (the early Explorer shell). This can be fixed by opening CONFIG.SYS and changing BUFFERS=30; Files=30 to BUFFERS=90; Files=90.
